Glacier National Park

Wow. Where else can you see ice and snow but also get sweaty and hot in the same 24 hours? And that's even if you don't take a hike!

On the first day of summer in 2011, only a little bit of the Going to the Sun Road, the main road that bisects the park west to east, was open. We drove it. No crowds. Few cars.

Right outside the park but off the tourist path, found a great family-owned private campground with rustic cabins nicer than most of the hotel-motel dives I've stayed in.

Found a great biker bar with juicy burgers. Was told by a local that the place scares away most tourists.  We loved it! Seems like a server job requirement is having lots of tattoos.

Didn't see grizzlies in the park, just lots of moose/elk.
The touristy sections of the park were fun.Over-priced gift shops with fifty-some dollar bear deterrent spray. Old lodges with lots of taxidermied animal heads and professional-sounding amateur piano players.

Going back!
